In 1997 the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) issued a two-year grant to create an entirely new form of military transportation. This lead to the development of the Tactical Electric No Signature (TENS) Mountain Bike. For this project, a new folding frame design called the X-Series™ was developed.

The X-Series™ utilized the award winning Folding Integrated Technology (F.I.T.™) system to provide an unprecedented combination of strength and rigidity in a frame that could be folded in half for military transport, and which also was compatible with airdrop by parachute.

Today, the SwissBike™ uses the same X-Series™ frame developed for military use, and provides the general public with a full-size bike with the strength to handle any terrain under load and the finesse necessary to quickly fold to fit where needed.
